Mission
'Discounted ... By a Lightning Strike!' is the name of my first financial thriller, in which human relationships, law, and finance are explored in their full shape, the invisible parts included, and across borders. The project started at the end of September 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, and resulted in a completed paperback in February 2024. You can check out the storyline description at the section Fiction! and check for availability. Though the storyline came about spontaneously, it touches upon a real-life challenge.
Since being a young guy, I have had the impression that there is an increasing mismatch between economic theory and real-life practical outcomes in society, especially after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. And since economics is ultimately about equilibrium through human interaction, this has a profound impact on free societies and human relationships, as others have noted before. Hence my objective is to work towards Calibrated Capitalism, which stands for a kind of capitalism that is ergodic (sustainable when taken to its long term logical conclusion) and calibrated by the rule of law as well as cultural/historical context. Europe, with its millennia of civilisation, is the perfect continent for achieving that objective.
To shed light and counter existing problems in economic, the section Facts is continuously being expanded with real-life events and developments in law and finance, many of which (but not all) deal with the EU and the Single Market. This requires adding new insights into market developments on an on-going basis, based on extensive research and frequent conversations with various stakeholders. 'Discounted ... By a Lightning Strike!' is thus a real attempt to improve markets from within, and describes the journey of a critical outsider who gradually develops into a professional who seeks to actively contribute to market infrastructure. Besides systemic criticism, the story is a defence plea of brave whistleblowers, maverick investors, hard-working financials and officials, and critical journalists, whose combined efforts make the financial system work as well as possible in an era characterised by volatility.
The Mission of this page is to build upon several ideas from the book and make the field of finance and economics hot again ánd a safeguard for individual rights, after a time-span of legacy problems and incomplete economic theory. The interaction between individual/human rights and market performance underpins much of the rationale behind the EU and the Euro. This offers a unique opportunity to achieve competition on fair terms and have a market that stands for more than mere numbers. Striving for this system may well be one of the greater challenges of the 21st Century, and could make a difference of life and death.
One of the central themes in my thriller as well as my research and work, is to find out how systemic imbalances caused by the Global Financial Crisis and COVID have affected free societies and markets, which innovations have taken place since then, and what can be done to stimulate sound investments and decision-making.
It is this critical attitude towards the status quo in finance that helped me motivate to become a financial and a writer. Documentations are mainly about the intersection of law and economics. Moreover, several reports at the facts-section contain photographs of locations I have visited, and underpin my keen interest in architecture.
