Eurasianism, a new road to serfdom? In defence of the (EU's) Charter of Fundamental Rights

What is Eurasianism?

In short, Eurasianism is a movement which actively places itself in opposition to liberalism. Its traces can be found in Russia, from where the notion of a restored Eurasian empire has found support among several non-European, highly illiberal and non-democratic countries. This may be relevant for decision-making in both law and economics, especially in the EU and countries within its sphere.

You can catch a glimpse of what it is through the storyline of ‘Discounted … By a Lightning Strike!’ and why it can pose a serious risk to our current economic system. Several developments in Europe, such as the rise in populism, increased economic imbalances, the Ukraine conflict, as well as corrosion of legal institutions have received impetus  from this movement.

Several scholarly articles explore this ideology, which has been topic of study as early as the 1990s.

The antagonist oligarchs in the story are backed by this illiberal ideology, seeking to disrupt free societies in the West and our rule of law through totalitarian regimes as well as from within, poking holes in the current (Neo)liberal economy and causing conflicts.

Will they succeed in hijacking the Eurosystem through a six-sigma event that puts Europe on a road to serfdom?

Hopefully not, provided Kaylon (main character) and his allies stay true to their core beliefs and to Calibrated Capitalism, which they think will save Europe's economy, democracy  and the rule of law.
